A closer look at donating in Maine

Who donates from Maine

Maine donations come from Portland offices and hospitals, the shipbuilding and defense work around Bath and Kittery, university campuses in Orono, and households in small towns and islands where e-waste options are limited.

Maine winters are long and cold. Let electronics warm up indoors before you pack them, and keep boxes dry during mud season.

Electronics rules in Maine

Maine has a manufacturer electronics recycling program for TVs, computers and monitors, and bans old CRT screens from the trash. Donating a working computer keeps it in use first.

We responsibly dispose of electronic waste through standard recycling and processing procedures, which are then handled by downstream facilities that process any e-waste material.

Donating from home

A home donation from Maine usually takes three steps: the form, our review, and shipping after approval. Photos help our team decide quickly.

Whether you live in Lewiston or a rural part of the state, you'll get the same instructions once your donation is approved.

Businesses, schools and nonprofits

Bulk donations from Maine are picked up after approval. Schools, clinics, law firms and companies of every size donate this way.

List the equipment, where it is, and whether drives are included. Businesses can request a certificate of data destruction.

Your data

We wipe every device with Acronis before it's reused. You can protect yourself further by backing up, signing out of your accounts and resetting the device before you donate. Our guides cover Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android.

Taxes for Maine donors

Computers with Causes is a program of Giving Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. If you itemize, you may be able to deduct the fair market value of your donation on your federal return. Starting in 2026, itemizers can deduct only giving above 0.5% of adjusted gross income.

State tax rules vary. Ask your tax preparer how a donation affects your Maine return. Our tax guide explains the federal rules.
