Who donates from Alabama
Alabama donations come from all over the state: engineering and aerospace offices around Huntsville, hospital and university departments in Birmingham, state agencies in Montgomery, and families along the Gulf Coast in Mobile. Many are a single family laptop. Others are carts of school Chromebooks or a retired engineering workstation.
Summer heat in Alabama can push a parked car well past safe temperatures for batteries. Keep a packed laptop indoors until you drop it off with the carrier.
Donating from home
Most donations from Alabama homes are a single laptop, desktop or tablet. Fill out the form with a few photos and an estimated value. Our team reviews it and, if approved, emails you the shipping address and packing instructions.
Donors in Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery and smaller towns all follow the same steps. Please don't ship anything before your form is approved.
Businesses, schools and nonprofits
Businesses, schools and nonprofits across Alabama can donate in bulk, and bulk pickup is available everywhere in the state. Send a list with device types, models and quantities, and tell us about access at your site.
Offices in Birmingham replacing a fleet of laptops, school districts retiring Chromebooks and property managers clearing out a building all use bulk donation.
Your data
We wipe every device with Acronis before it's reused. You can protect yourself further by backing up, signing out of your accounts and resetting the device before you donate. Our guides cover Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android.
Taxes for Alabama donors
Computers with Causes is a program of Giving Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. If you itemize, you may be able to deduct the fair market value of your donation on your federal return. Starting in 2026, itemizers can deduct only giving above 0.5% of adjusted gross income.
State tax rules vary. Ask your tax preparer how a donation affects your Alabama return. Our tax guide explains the federal rules.
Questions from Alabama donors
Yes, for review. Tell us the models and whether drives are included. Many contractors must follow their own data rules first, so check with your security officer before you send the list. A certificate of data destruction is available on request.
Yes, with a little care. Pack it the day you ship, keep the box out of a hot car, and drop it off at the carrier instead of leaving it on a porch.
Water-damaged devices are rarely reusable, so tell us honestly on the form if a computer got wet. Dry, working equipment from Mobile, Gulf Shores and the rest of the coast is reviewed like any other donation.
They do. If your church or community center is upgrading a computer lab, list everything on one form and we'll tell you whether it fits a bulk pickup.
